Tue City brief: Data helps lift UK market

A rebound in mining stocks and a big takeover deal in the telecoms sector helped the FTSE100 surge closer to its record highs.

Nokia is to buy Alcatel-Lucent just a week after Shell snapped up BG Group, heralding a new wave of merger and acquisition activity.

The FFTSE 100 closed 0.2% higher at 7,075.26 points.

Analysts were buoyed by an improving economic outlook and new data saying inflation in the UK remained at zero. Indicators on fuel and food costs were all positive for the economy.
