Company braced for October figures
VW Passat diesel best selling used car in Scotland
Volkswagen diesels were the fastest selling used cars in September, according to newly released figures.
In Scotland, the biggest seller was the 2014 plate VW Passat diesel estate.
Auto Trader, which compiled the figures, acknowledged that the emissions scandal only became public knowledge on 21 September.
However, they may prove either that the company can withstand the crisis or else give an indication of the extent of the fall it is facing if customers choose to switch models.
Across the UK the VW Sharan diesel was the most popular used car with the Touran MPV, Golf and Seat Leon among other big selling diesels.
“Auto Trader reports these figures on a monthly basis, but I have no doubt that data for September will be scrutinised in great detail by motor industry commentators,” said Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader’s director of retailer and consumer products.
The figures come as Volkswagen’s US boss admitted he was informed about possible emissions non-compliance in 2014.
America chief executive Michael Horn made the confession in a written testimony he will present to a government committee investigating the scandal.
He said he was made aware of the issue after a West Virginia University study was published in spring 2014.
“I was informed that EPA regulations included various penalties for non-compliance with the emissions standards and that the agencies can conduct engineering tests which could include ‘defeat device’ testing or analysis,” he said.
“I was also informed that the company engineers would work with the agencies to resolve the issue.
“Later in 2014, I was informed that the technical teams had a specific plan for remedies to bring the vehicles into compliance and that they were engaged with specific agencies about the process.”
