Tourism boost for Borders

Melrose ready to tackle rugby event

Rugby sevensMelrose is bracing itself for an invasion this week as the Borders town and its 2,000 inhabitants share their scenic surroundings with 12,000 rugby fans from around the globe.

The town will once again adopt a carnival atmosphere and celebrate the key date in its sporting calendar this Saturday as  local, UK and international teams, including those from South Africa and Germany, kick off the 125th Melrose Sevens tournament.

It is the biggest tourism boost to the Borders, worth an estimated £2 million, aided by live BBC transmission which attracts more than 50,000 viewers, bringing Melrose to the attention of a wider audience.

The event, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, also brings significant business to companies from a wider area. Event A Loo supplies 70 toilet facilities to the Rugby Sevens tournament.

Event A LooIsabel Young (pictured left), who created the firm with business partner Jim Buchanan, said:  “We cover all types of events and we’ve had a royal warrant for 14 years so we truly provide a mix of facilities to all types of people but our Melrose booking is an annual pleasure.

“Our company is based near Hamilton which demonstrates that the economic benefits of the rugby tournament spread beyond the town boundaries of Melrose itself. After such a longstanding relationship with the tournament it’s close to our hearts.”
