City shopping malls report record festive footfall

Two of Glasgow’s largest out-of-town shopping destinations have hailed record annual numbers.
Silverburn said the centre had recorded 16.5 million visits over the past year, marking its busiest year to date.
This represents a 10% increase on 2024, with a “particularly strong” end to the year seeing footfall rise by 20% during the key pre-Christmas trading week.
Over the past three years, Silverburn has transformed its retail mix, moving from a 20% vacancy rate to near full occupancy.
However, Mike Ashley’s Flannels is to leave the centre amid speculation that its owner Frasers, in which he has a majority state, will move the brand to the Braehead Shopping Centre which it acquired late last year for £220 million.
Glasgow Fort saw an 8% increase in footfall last year, compared to 2024. It said retailers across the venue enjoyed strong sales figures. Its said 23 December was the busiest day since it opened.
Visitor numbers continued to climb following the opening of several new stores in 2024, including Primark, Victoria’s Secret and Adidas, which consistently drew “significant crowds”.
Frasers has also owned the Overgate Centre in Dundee since March 2023 which last year saw ten store openings occupying a combined total of 88,063 sq. ft, five lease renewals totalling 12,634 sq. ft, and three major store refreshes.
There was a 30% uplift in sales for 2025, while tenant occupancy is sitting at 90%.
