Saltire Scholar Internships
Record applicants for Saltire Scholar scheme
Saltire scholars: record number
A record number of undergraduates are bidding to take part in a scheme which enables students to learn from working overseas.
Entrepreneurial Scotland has received 1,242 applications for its 2018 Saltire Scholar Internship Programme, 35% higher than the 916 last time.
The programme launched in 2007 with just six participants. In summer 2018 it is forecast to facilitate 185 internships between Scotland’s most talented students and leading organisations all over the world.
Sara Nelson, head of Saltire Scholar Internship programme, said the programme gives penultimate year university students in Scotland the opportunity to take part in commercially-significant work experience.
“We encourage our participants to exercise every entrepreneurial bone in their bodies when working within our host companies to demonstrate new perspectives and fresh thinking.
“That a record number of students from Scottish universities identify this as an aspirational experience is a boost for our mission to see Scotland become the most entrepreneurial society in the world.”
Emily Breen, 2017 scholar at Zenflow, San Francisco, California, said: “A Saltire Scholar Internship is unique in that it provides the best of both worlds: personal and professional.
“This summer I have had amazing experiences outside of the office and met some amazing people.
“But I have also been able to contribute to a start-up at the cutting edge of medical technology and work closely with its senior engineers and founder – an experience that I would not have been able to have through any other programme.”
