President pledges to rebuild nation

US lurches to protectionism as Trump puts ‘America first’

Donald TrumpUS president Donald Trump delivered a strongly patriotic address at his inauguration ceremony and triggered a protectionist economic policy which will put “America first”.

In a characteristically uncompromising message, he said other countries had benefited from the efforts of America which had “made other countries rich while the wealth, strength and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon.

“One by one the factories shuttered with not even a thought for the millions of Americans left behind.

“But that is the past. Now we are looking only to the future.

“From this day forward a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward it is going to be America First. Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families.”

In another signal of his intent to seal the border with Mexico, he said: “We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.”

“Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength. America will start winning again.

“We will bring back our jobs, we will bring back our borders, we will bring back our wealth and we will bring back our dreams,” he said.

He repeated his commitment to invest in infrastructure with investment in roads, bridges, airport, tunnels and railways.

“We will get our people off welfare and back to work, rebuilding our country,” he said, adding that the country will follow two simple rules:”Buy American and hire American.”

He promised to stop the “carnage” of drugs destroying young lives.

On America’s place in the world, he said America would not impose itself on others which had a right to protect their own interests.

Mr Trump pledged to seek friendships with other nations but said he would unite the civilised world to “eradicate completely” radical Islamic terrorism.
