Aussies inflict late agony on battling Scots
Scotland 22 Australia 23
Scotland suffered an agonising one-point defeat to the Wallabies after taking an early 10-0 lead.
With only six minutes left Scotland led 22-16 and looked on course for a famous victory.
But Tevita Kuridrani’s outstretched arm put Australia in the lead with only three minutes to play.
It was a gut-wrenching end to a pulsating match in which Scotland’s performance was widely praised and gave encouragement ahead of the Six Nations Tournament.
Scotland centre Huw Jones said: “It is absolutely heart-breaking. We really thought we were going to hold on. It is gutting. Or discipline was not good enough today. There were too many penalties and infringements.”
At Twickenham England defeated South Africa 37-21 to make it 10 wins in 10 for coach Eddie Jones.
Even so, England captain Dylan Hartley felt the team could do better.
“There’s plenty to work on, so that keeps us grounded.” he said. “We conceded six penalties in the opening 20 minutes and that isn’t good enough.
“But we’re very happy to get that monkey off our back and I’m very proud of our guys.”
In Rome, New Zealand beat Italy 68-10.
