Rangers have hired former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as head coach, just days after the German withdrew his candidacy for the Ibrox hot seat.

Rohl, 36, who had been an early contender, will replace Russell Martin who was sacked on 5 October after just 17 games, making his tenure the shortest for a permanent manager at the club.

The board turned to Rohl after ex-Ibrox defender Kevin Muscat failed to agree terms and chose to remain with Shanghai Port.

Rohl was the club’s third choice after an unsuccessful pursuit of top target Steven Gerrard and is Rangers’ second youngest manager.

He was in charge of Sheffield Wednesday between October 2023 and July 2025 following coaching roles with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and Germany.

“It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world,” said Rohl, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.

“I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

“The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now – my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this.”

Sporting director Kevin Thelwell added: “Danny has the qualities required to succeed here, allied with being an exceptional coach.

“He has worked in some of the most demanding football environments in the world, where winning is the only expectation, and we believe that background has prepared him for Rangers.

“His job will be to get the best out of the players and build a team that, first and foremost, wins, as we all target success this season.”
