Tour over

Injury turns Graham’s Lions dream into nightmare

Darcy Graham
Misfortune: Darcy Graham

Edinburgh Rugby star Darcy Graham’s Lions’ dream is over after the winger confirmed he will miss the remainder of the Australian tour through injury.

The 28-year-old caught the eye on his try-scoring debut against a First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne yesterday but limped out of the action after being on the field for just 16 minutes.

A late call-up for the crocked Mack Hansen after missing out on the initial squad, Graham was reduced to tears on the touchline as he contemplated his misfortune having appeared to damage ankle ligaments as the Lions completed an unconvincing 24-19 win in their final provincial match.

He has taken to social media to confirm his worst fears have been realised, saying: “16 minutes I’ll never forget. It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey but it was a dream come true to pull on the famous red jersey and make my Lions debut.

“Gutted it ended the way it did, but so proud to have been part of this special group. Thank you for all the support. We try again in 4 years’ time.”

With the Lions having defeated Australia in the opening Test on Saturday, Graham had been hoping to state his claim for a place in the final two matches as Andy Farrell’s side looks to clinch the series.

In the wake of Graham’s injury, Farrell said: “He’s devastated. He was so upset. You could see how much it meant to him hobbling off. He’s got a Lions caps, he’s played for the British and Irish Lions and scored a try. He’ll remember that forever.”

The Lions face the Wallabies in Melbourne on Saturday before the third and final Test against the Wallabies on Saturday, 2 August.
