Hainan Airlines extends Edinburgh-Beijing service

Scotland’s roster of international flights received a second boost in recent days after Hainan Airlines said it will operate the country’s only direct service to China all year-round.
The airline currently operates a service between Edinburgh and Beijing from March until October.
Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport said: “We’ve always been proud of being home to Scotland’s only direct service to China so it’s great to see Hainan making that a year-round route.
“Ensuring Scotland has connections to the world is a key aim for us, and having direct access to one of the world’s biggest economies is something that will be welcomed by many industries, and by our partners in Edinburgh and beyond.”
On Friday, United Airlines said will extend its seasonal service between Edinburgh and Washington DC to almost year-round, increasing its seat offering from the Scottish capital by almost 10%.
Liquid gains
Passengers at Edinburgh airport can now keep liquids and large electrical items in their bags following a £24 million investment in new technology.
Eight new scanners are now live, meaning the security hall has two additional lines to speed up waiting times for travellers.
Liquids up to 100 millilitres as well as laptops and tablets no longer need to be removed from hand luggage.
Michael Hering, head of security at Edinburgh Airport said 97% of passengers are already passing through in under 10 minutes.
“It’s also important to note that our high safety levels have been maintained and improved on due to the 3D technology, meaning it is a faster, more secure process in time for peak summer.”
