McGills: looking south

Bus operator McGill’s Group is considering expansion of its services across the UK and into other markets.

The business – owned by James and Sandy Easdale – has grown out of its west coast base with the purchase of Xplore Dundee from National Express and of the former First Scotland East operation. The group’s coaching activities have also expanded.

Chairman Ralph Roberts told the trade website routeone that McGill’s is “actively pursuing opportunities to expand in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and other EU territories.”

He hinted at acquisitions by saying the financial strength of the firm’s owners provided the capability to take on large contracts.

Despite having questioned proposed re-regulation in the Glasgow city region, he said “a franchised market is no barrier to us.” It is currently building a ‘bid team’ to help meet opportunities.

He revealed that McGill’s was one of two final bidders alongside eventual purchaser FirstGroup for the RATP Dev Transit London business.

In late 2024, Tony Williamson, who has extensive senior-level experience in global regulated bus markets, was hired as group CEO.
