Two fashion retailers are moving into one of Scotland’s biggest shopping malls in a timely boost to the sector.

Bershka and Pull&Bear, both established in the 1990s and owned by international fashion giant Inditex, will open their first Glasgow stores at Silverburn.

The latest tenants join a centre which enjoyed a record-breaking year, attracting 15.2 million shoppers. It is preparing to welcome luxury beauty department store, H Beauty – part of Harrod’s – Hotel Chocolat and Black Sheep Coffee. King Pins will add bowling and shuffleboarding to the leisure offering.

Bershka will take the current space occupied by Zara, also an Inditex brand, which is opening a larger store in the former Debenhams unit. Pull&Bear is occupying space left by Topshop.

Bershka, Pull&Bear and H Beauty have stores in Edinburgh’s St James Quarter.

David Pierotti, general manager of Silverburn, said: “This double announcement gives an early flavour of what is to come this year at Silverburn and highlights how hard we are working to enhance our fashion offer.”

Silverburn’s continued buoyancy offers some encouragement in a week that saw Glasgow fashion chain Quiz Clothing announce the closure of 23 stores amid a cash crisis.

New data showed retail sales volumes rose sharply last month, though the 1.7% rise in January – significantly higher than the 0.5% expected by analysts – was driven by food sales. Demand was slow in non-food shops such as clothing retailers, where transactions were down by 1.3%.

Retail is among the sectors expecting a big hit from the April increase in employers’ national insurance contributions and the living wage.
