Thomson confirmed as CEO of The Data Lab

Heather Thomson has been confirmed as chief executive of The Data Lab, Scotland’s innovation centre for data and AI, with immediate effect.
Ms Thomson joined The Data Lab in 2018, leading the £8m data and AI skills programme before stepping up to the executive team in 2021.
She was appointed interim CEO to lead a 10-year National Innovation Centre Programme following Brian Hills’ departure in April last year.
“Our online community of over 6,000 members across 80 countries is a testament to the power of collective action,” she said.
“As technology continues to advance at an unprecedented rate, this is a pivotal time as both the Scottish and UK Governments address the actions required to ensure that, as a nation, we are not left behind.
“Together, we will work to ensure that digital, data, and AI literacy is accessible to all, helping to position Scotland as a leader in responsible innovation that empowers everyone to thrive.”
Les Bayne, Chair of The Data Lab, said: Heather’s leadership has been a driving force in the evolution of The Data Lab, cultivating collaborations between academia and industry, growing talent and driving innovation through skills and education. Thanks to Heather’s contribution, we’re in a strong position to continue this work over the next decade.”
