Jimmy Calderwood, the former Aberdeen and Dunfermline Athletic manager, has died at the age of 69.

He was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2017 and will be fondly remembered by fans of both clubs for his attacking style of play.

He became Pars boss in 1999, guiding the Fifers to promotion to the top tier in his first season in charge. In five successful years at East End Park, he steered Dunfermline to a club-best fourth-place finish and also took them to the final of the Scottish Cup where they lost out to Celtic.

His success at East End Park caught the attention of Aberdeen and he moved to Pittodrie where he spent another five years in the Dons dug out.

Highlight of his spell in the Granite City was a third-place finish in season 2006-07 and qualification for the UEFA Cup, where Aberdeen made it through to the last 32 only to be knocked out by Bayern Munich after drawing 2-2 at home in the first leg.

After leaving Aberdeen in 2009, Calderwood moved on to Kilmarnock the following year and kept the struggling Ayrshire side in the top flight.

2011 saw him move north to Dingwall to take charge of Ross County before he took over at Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles. His final managerial appointment was with De Graafschap in the Netherlands.

His playing career saw him play 150 matches for Birmingham City in midfield before heading to the Netherlands in 1979 where he played for Sparta Rotterdam, Willem II, Roda JC and Hercales, hanging up his boots 10 years later.
