Brewing entrepreneur James Watt says he may have to postpone his marriage after being landed with a tax bombshell.

The co-founder of BrewDog wants to invest in fiancee Georgia Toffolo’s raw dog food business Wild Pack, describing himself as a “massive advocate” of its natural ingredients.

But HMRC has told him that if the couple marry within three years of him investing in the company he becomes a “connected person” and will lose his EIS tax relief.

Mr Watt is now asking his followers on social media to advise him on whether he should delay the wedding for three years and lock in the tax relief, or forgo the tax break and marry Georgia in 2025.

“Yes, I’m biased. But in my defence, it is a bloody great business,” he says, telling his fans that the first option is that “Love always wins – take the tax relief hit” and the second is that “true love can wait for three years – secure the relief”.

He adds: “If anyone knows about a loophole (Option C) I am all ears.”
