Eatery shuts
Calton Hill restaurant The Lookout closes doors

A restaurant with some of the best views across Edinburgh’s skyline has closed, with the owners not disclosing the reasons behind their decision.
The Lookout by Gardener’s Cottage – which opened on Calton Hill in 2018 – initially opened as a partnership between the Gardener’s Cottage and Collective, which redeveloped the neighbouring City Observatory into an art gallery.
With floor-to-ceiling glass walls and partial suspension over Calton Hill’s north-west slope, the Lookout provided diners with panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
The Lookout was a sister restaurant to the bakery and licensed cafe, Quay Commons in Leith, which opened in 2017 and is listed as permanently closed.
The website confirms the restaurant is now permanently closed and thanks customers for their support over the years.
The Calton Hill Conservation Trust has also posted on X to confirm the closure. Gardener’s Cottage, which was Michelin recommended and located on Royal Terrace Gardens in Edinburgh, has also closed down.

I have a restaurant voucher to use, any ideas how to find out who the administrators are so that I can make a claim?
Hi Steve,
Did you get anywhere with a refund or name of administrators? I too have a voucher.
Thank you.
I had a reservation for this evening 6th December 2024 – and i haven’t even been notified that the restaurant is closed. Luckily my partner checked the website this morning to look at the menu and saw the message.
Pretty terrible to not notify patrons.
