Rangers players Jordan Jones and George Edmundson have been banned for seven games by the Scottish FA for breaching Covid regulations.

The pair were suspended by the club after attending a late-night party on 1 November and subsequently charged by the SFA for acting against the interests of the sport and breaching coronavirus rules.

The Ibrox due learned their fate following a disciplinary hearing at Hampden Park, with the lengthy suspension beginning immediately.

Although they have yet to feature regularly for the first team this season, boss Steven Gerrard will now not have them available for selection until 30 December when the Gers are due to face St Mirren in Paisley.

In a club statement, Rangers said: “Football is in a privileged position and we recognise the responsibility that we all must uphold within the national sport.

“The outcome of today’s hearing brings the standard and expectations set by the Scottish FA into sharp focus.”

Both players have now apologised. Jones said: “I acknowledge that my actions have fallen well short of the standard expected at Rangers Football Club. I am sorry to the fans, the club and my team-mates for causing this situation, it won’t happen again.”

Edmundson said: “I apologise unreservedly to the Rangers fans for my actions. I have assured the manager, club and my team-mates that these actions won’t be repeated, and I have learned from my mistake.”

Jones and Edmundson are the latest top-flight players to find themselves in trouble after breaking Covid protocol rules.

Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli was banned for three matches, with a further two suspended, for travelling to Spain in August without notifying the club before returning to play against Kilmarnock without quarantining.

Suspended three-game bans were handed out to eight Aberdeen players after visiting a bar in the city in contravention of lockdown rules.

Both Celtic and Aberdeen were fined £30,000 in relation to the conduct of their players.

Dundee United’s Mark Connolly was punished by the SFA with a suspended two-game ban last month after failing to wear a face mask in a taxi.
