A new Scottish film studio, set up by Jason Connery and producer Bob Last, will be used in a new six-part television drama set on an oil rig.

The series follows a group of workers who are due to return to the mainland when an eerie fog descends and a mysterious force begins to take hold.

The Rig will be the first Amazon Original Series shot exclusively in Scotland, set on location in the North Sea and at FirstStage Studios, the new Scottish film and TV studio space in Leith.

Oscar-nominated producer Last and actor and director Connery, whose father Sir Sean died on Saturday, won a tender from Screen Scotland in March to run the 8.6-acre facility in a former wave power manufacturing plant. It is not clear if Connery is still active in the project as only Last is currently listed as an officer in the company.

The studio was used for some of the production work on Disney/Marvel’s blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War in 2017 before Last and Connery took over.

The Rig has been created by new writer David Macpherson and will be directed by John Strickland, known for Line of Duty and Bodyguard.

Georgia Brown, director of European Amazon Originals for Prime Video, described it as “a brilliant story, expertly told” which asks searching questions about what it takes to survive.

The series will be produced by Wild Mercury Productions next year.
