McAlpine on site to create new Edinburgh Park community

New offices will be among the mix

Workers are on site at the long-awaited next phase of Edinburgh Park which will provide up to one million sq ft of offices in a vast new commercial and leisure community.

Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine began excavations earlier this month on the vacant land in the south west corner of the Gyle development now served by the tram at two stops and close to the city by-pass.

The 43-acre site will include football pitches and tennis courts, shops, bars, restaurants, a health centre and landscaping around a public square to create a new community that will be occupied beyond normal working hours.

There are also plans for a new medical centre and performance arts space. It is due to complete in summer 2021 and is expected to provide space for up to 5,500 workers.

It will help meet a need for more grade A office space in Edinburgh which is seeing a rise in rent as a result of demand exceeding supply.

There have also been calls for more office provision beyond the city centre where the M&G owned Haymarket development is now one of the few sites awaiting work to begin.
