An Innovation Hub will receive £49.2 million of support after the project’s business case was accepted by the City Region Deal Joint Committee.

The new Usher Institute building is expected to cost £68m in total with the balance funded by the University of Edinburgh.

The building, to be based at Edinburgh BioQuarter, is being designed by architects at Hassell Studio. It will provide a base for members of the Institute including the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit, as well as partners and start-up companies working in the field of data-driven innovation in health and social care. It is due to open in 2023.

Colan Mehaffey, chief operating officer of the Data-Driven Innovation Programme at the Usher Institute, said: “Through the Usher Institute, over the lifetime of the programme, we will engage and train over 20,000 students and health and social care professionals in the application of data.

“We will undertake health and social care research projects worth £138m.”
