Beattie blasts council planners as Frame adds to team

Dismayed by decision: Gordon Beattie

Gordon Beattie, chairman of the eponymous communications agency, has accused South Lanarkshire Council of being anti-business after its planning committee turned down his company’s expansion scheme.

Beattie wants to build a £500,000 extension to its office in Uddingston to accommodate a film studio, boardroom, meeting room and visitor reception.

The application was rejected on the grounds of a shortage of parking spaces, despite Beattie Communications assuring the council that the development would not lead to additional personnel working on the site.

“The extension was all about protecting the 30 posts we already have in Uddingston. The fact that it was rejected on the advice of a planning official and not even debated, confirms to me that the council has no interest in keeping jobs in the town.

“Our plan for a 181 metre extension sparked a petition, signed by around 30 local homeowners who dislike the idea of a business operating in what they consider to be a residential area.

“The truth is, there’s a hotel in the street and we’ve operated from this location for 22 years and that’s longer than many of our neighbours have lived in the area.

“We will consider appealing against the planning committee’s decision but my message to businesses thinking about locating in South Lanarkshire is – don’t.” 

Frame boosts payroll

Frame has added three members to its sports marketing team which is led by former Scottish FA head of communications and corporate affairs, Darryl Broadfoot.

It has hired Stuart MacKenzie from Wire; Mark Snell from the Scottish FA and Isabelle Salter from Electrify.

Mr MacKenzie’s arrival follows almost 20 years in the industry during which time he has been a senior media officer at Commonwealth Games Scotland, overseen SSE’s sponsorship portfolio which included the FA Cup and Wembley Arena, been a media officer for the national sports agency, sportscotland, and worked with The R&A as content editor.

Frame’s sports PR team promoted UEFA’s Europe-wide women’s football campaign #WePlayStrong, including securing high-profile ambassadors such as Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and chart-topping Rita Ora, and producing their online video channel.

It will be providing creative comms support across EURO2020, Champions League and the Europa League and has been hired to promote the 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles and also provides various consumer, corporate and social communications support to a range of governing bodies including the Scottish FA, Tennis Scotland and Scottish Golf. 

Frame’s sport portfolio accounts for a third its PR revenue and the reinforcement of the team is designed to accelerate growth within the sector.

Frame has over 90 staff and has more than doubled revenue over the past four years bringing in fees of £5.2m last year across PR, content, design and advertising.
