New Airbus base
Easyjet expansion will add capacity and jobs at Glasgow Airport
More seats for passengers
EasyJet has announced a boost to passenger capacity at Glasgow Airport and a new route, creating 50 jobs for flight, cabin and ground crew.
An Airbus A320 will remain based in Glasgow throughout the year, providing 340,000 more seats for passengers travelling to and from Glasgow. It joins two 156-seat Airbus A319 and two 186-seat A320 aircraft already serving the airline’s customers in the city.
The airline has also announced a new route between Glasgow and Birmingham. The connection will operate 13 times a week throughout the year, with flights launching on 29 March.
On 10 November 1995 easyJet’s first flight took off for Glasgow from London Luton. Since then easyJet has remained committed to the airport by maintaining a continuous operation and flying over 34 million passengers to and from Glasgow.
Today, EasyJet is the largest airline in Glasgow and operates up to 294 flights a week across 19 routes. The company was the first airline to carry one million passengers in a year from Glasgow and the airline continues to see passenger numbers grow.
In 2019 the company will see its domestic links from Glasgow increase by over 5%.
Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, said: “The addition of another aircraft will help us to deliver long term, sustainable growth at the base providing customers with a greater range of destinations, all with low fares and great service.
“EasyJet has selected Glasgow as the focus of its growth in Scotland and we are excited about the future at Glasgow.”
Francois Bourienne, AGS Airports group’s chief commercial officer, described EasyJet’s plans to expand operations as “fantastic news”.
“The additional aircraft not only puts Glasgow Airport on a course for future growth, but also underlines easyJet’s continued commitment to our passengers,” he said.
“The introduction of easyJet’s new Birmingham route is also welcome news as services to England’s second biggest city continue to be very popular with both our business and leisure customers.”
