Filling a gap in Canongate and student housing needs

Plans have been lodged by property developer, Summix for student homes on a derelict site off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Located in the Canongate, adjacent to Old Tolbooth Wynd and the Canongate Kirk, the 91-bed development aims to regenerate the area.

It will be close to the new Waverley Development, now under construction and in a sensitive location in the Old Town Conservation Area. It will draw on the existing fabric of the currently neglected (redundant) buildings which are at the end of their economic life.

The development will meet ongoing demand for student accommodation with full-time student numbers across Edinburgh projected to rise by 14% by 2021/2022

Students from this development are expected to generate c. £840,000 in additional expenditure on items such as food, clothes and eating out.

Stuart Black from Summix commented: “Great attention has been taken to implement a design-led approach which delivers a final piece of the jigsaw in this World Heritage Site and Conservation area.”
