More women partners

Balfour+Manson hits female majority milestone

Lynne MulcahyLaw firm Balfour+Manson has announced a series of hires which means it now has more female than male partners. The appointments take its full partnership complement to 24 of which 13 are women.

It is believed this is the first time in Scotland that a firm with 20 plus partners has had a majority who are female. Appropriately, Balfour+Manson appointed Ethel Houston as the first female partner of any Scottish law firm, 70 years ago.

Promoted to partner in the Edinburgh office are commercial law solicitor Stephanie Zak and employment law specialist Sarah Shiels. In Aberdeen, Lynne Mulcahy (pictured) in the firm’s family law division is also promoted to partner. Catriona Torrance, who specialises in private client matters and Andrew Wallace an employment law specialist, have been promoted to associate.

Elaine Motion, executive chairman, said: “The gender profile of the legal profession in Scotland is shifting as a majority of those entering the profession are young women.”
