Retail boost on 25 December
Christmas Day bargain hunters poised to spend £1bn online
Bargain hunters will be out in force on Christmas Day
Christmas Day traditions are likely to be further interrupted this year as 12 million bargain hunters spend a record amount online.
It is expected to be the first ever £1 billion Christmas Day for internet shopping, up from £895million last year, according to the Centre for Retail Research studies for VoucherCodes, and data from online retail chiefs IMRG,.
Mobile shopping will hit a record level of 70p in every £1 spent – double the rate just five years ago – with spending hitting a peak at 11am, after gift vouchers are opened, and again at 5pm following the afternoon movies and before the evening TV specials.
Meanwhile, high streets are battling to keep up, with overall footfall down on last year. Retail data analyst Diane Wehrle at Springboard said: “It’s not good,”
Springboard noted that footfall has fallen on the last Saturday before Christmas every year consecutively for the last decade. This has also been observed with Boxing Day sales.
