Thomson’s Inverleith buys organic foods chain
Inverleith, the Edinburgh-based investment vehicle chaired by Ben Thomson, has bought a majority stake in Planet Organic, the London health and well-being supermarket and online retailer, in a deal worth about £15 million.
The investment will help expand the stores the number of stores in the city. There are no immediate plans to open any in Scotland.
Stella Morse, chief financial officer of Inverleith who worked with Edinburgh-based Genius Foods, will join the Planet Organic board.
Investment bank veteran Mr Thomson (pictured) said: “This is an interesting time of change for the High Street with shoppers wanting more community-based shopping.
“Consumers are looking for an experience when they shop and for real knowledge about the products offered. They care deeply about the quality and provenance of products they buy and increasingly search for items which help them lead a holistic healthy lifestyle.
“This is the sort of shopping that is the future of the high street and we are pleased to be helping Planet Organic to open in other locations around London.”
Inverleith is a €60 million fund investing into consumer brand companies within the health & wellbeing, lifestyle and heritage sectors.
