Napier offers students new Fintech degree course

Business School: masters degree on offer

Edinburgh Napier is responding to the growth of the fintech sector by launching a dedicated Masters degree in the subject.

The university will offer a Masters in Financial Technology, drawing its content from the Business School and the School of Computing which has an internationally-recognised reputation for research in cybersecurity.

Peter Cruickshank, director of postgraduate programmes at the School of Computing, said: “This is a great example of how our university is responding to the convergence of finance and technology, and will equip students with the technical and data skills which are becoming essential for a career in finance.”

Students will have the opportunity to study subjects such as financial management, data wrangling and transnational financial crime as they equip themselves with the knowledge of banking, cybersecurity and more in order to develop their technical awareness in the financial sector.

There will also be an opportunity to learn about the management of online identity issues such as fraud.

Students will develop a deep understanding of the complexity of how international financial markets, banking and money transfer systems are affected by innovations in fintech, leading them to potential careers in banks, financial institutions, regulatory agencies and beyond.

Gail Boag, Dean of Edinburgh Napier’s Business School, said: “As the only Scottish University to offer undergraduate degrees in Financial Services developed with input from leading Scottish financial institutions, I am delighted to see our leadership in this area grow with an exciting new course that cuts across traditional academic boundaries.

“Fintech has evolved to disrupt and reshape commerce and in particular financial services, gaining significant momentum. We are well placed to support this growing digital sector in Scotland combining expertise in finance and computing with practice and application.”

David Potter, Fintech programme leader at Edinburgh Napier, said: “The global phenomenon of Fintech is key to the successful future of all organisations, no matter what size and we’re delighted that Edinburgh Napier is investing in this area with the establishment of a new dedicated Masters course.”
