Federer falls to giant South African in five set epic

Roger Federer

Out: No prizes for Roger Federer at Wimbledon this year

Wimbledon saw its biggest upset so far when Roger Federer was knocked out in a five-set thriller by the South African Kevin Anderson.

The eighth seed battled back from two sets down and facing match point in the third to dismiss the reigning champion in an epic quarter final contest.

Federer, who will be 37 next month, looked on course for a routine victory, but the match was to take a stunning turn as 6ft 8in Anderson played his way back into the match.

It was the first match in the tournament that Federer had dropped a set, but Anderson’s determination and steely nerve proved decisive in denying his opponent the opportunity of a record ninth title to win 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 in four hours and 13 minutes.

The 2017 US Open finalist heads for his first semi-final at Wimbledon where he will play John Isner who defeated Milos Raonic.

Novak Djokovic beat Kei Nishikori in four sets to book his place in the last four against Rafael Nadal who got the best of Juan-Martin del Potro by three sets to two.
