Scottish holiday firm Barrhead Travel has been bought by one of North America’s largest tourism companies, Travel Leaders Group.
The deal, the terms of which remain undisclosed, is expected to close by the end of March and will see the Glasgow-based business become part of Travel Leaders Group’s growing presence in the UK.
Founded in 1975, Barrhead has grown into one of Scotland’s biggest retail travel companies with more than 75 locations and 900 employees and agents.
Barrhead will retain its distinct brand identity within the Travel Leaders UK portfolio and no major changes in operations are anticipated with chief executive Sharon Munro continuing to manage the business. Her father and Barrhead founder, Bill Munro, will serve in a strategic advisory role as chairman of the Barrhead division within Travel Leaders Group.
“Bill and Sharon Munro have devoted their careers to building this extraordinary business,” said Travel Leaders Group CEO Ninan Chacko.
“We’re pleased that the Munro family is entrusting the future of Barrhead, its employees, agents and customers to our organisation. We’re excited about this chance to expand our presence in Scotland and the UK overall and the opportunities this affords both companies.”
Mrs Munro said she believed the agreement will allow Barrhead to continue its development in the industry.
She said: “Joining with Travel Leaders Group will give us the resources to expand into additional markets, access to new technology and the ability to innovate. This agreement creates exciting new prospects for both our enterprises.”
Once the transaction is finalised, Travel Leaders UK portfolio will include Barrhead, Colletts Travel, Protravel International UK and Tzell UK, which are among the UK’s leading travel companies.
Combined, these four brands, together with ALTOUR UK, specialising in entertainment and corporate travel, and its recent merger with Travel Leaders Group Holdings, will rank among the top travel management companies in the UK.
Travel Leaders Group encompasses nearly one-third of all travel agents in North America. It is a leader in both consumer retail travel and global corporate travel and consistently ranks as one of the top travel companies nationwide.
