FTSE 100 falls as investors take profits

London Stock ExchangeShares fell across global markets as investors took profits on miners and banks which have enjoyed a strong start to the year.

The FTSE 100 followed a fall in other markets, closing 1.09% (83.55 points) lower at 7,587.98.

The index has hit a series of record highs in recent weeks but faltered because of its exposure to financials and commodities which fell.

All major markets in Asia saw heavy falls on Tuesday – taking their lead from sell-offs in the US.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index posted its biggest one-day loss since mid-December, closing down 359.60 points, or 1.1% at 32,607.3.

China’s main Shanghai Composite index slipped 1% to 3,488.2 points.

And in Japan, the Nikkei ended 1.4% down at 23,292 points – a lower close than it has seen this year.
