Number’s up for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay
Missing number: The event is not being promoted as Hogmanay 18 (pic: Terry Murden)
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay promotion seems to have lost a key – and controversial – part of its message.
The signage at the main performance arena in Princes St Gardens is noticeably missing one element of this year’s logo.
Instead of “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 18” it simply appears as “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.”
Critics have taken to social media to argue that the promotion of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 18 is inaccurate as Hogmanay is the Scots description for New Year’s Eve, or 31 December, and therefore the signage should say Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 17.
Mixed messages: the signage and website gives both dates for the event
All signs around the city, on billboards and public transport, feature the “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 18” logo.
However, there is no sign of it above the stage being erected in the shadow of the castle ahead of the world’s biggest street party.
A spokesman for the organiser Underbelly said: “The lack of a number on the big stage branding is so we can use the same signage next year and beyond.”
