Scots stun Wallabies with victory in Sydney

Australia 19 Scotland 24
Sydney

Scotland pulled off a stunning victory over the Aussies to give Gregor Townsend an unbeaten start to his reign.

The result sees Scotland move up to fourth in the world rankings.

It repeats their success in Australia in 2012 but this was their first ever win in Sydney and avenges narrow defeats in their last two meetings including the controversial 2015 World Cup exit.

Both teams scored three tries in this encounter but it was Scotland’s accurate goal kicking and robust defence that held out and made the difference.

The visitors were helped when Bernard Foley missed a simple chance to level the score and typified a bad day at the office for the hosts.

The Scots resisted Australian pressure in the last 10 minutes to hold out for a famous victory.

Australia tries: Folau (20,40), Genia (56)
Conversions: Foley (21,58)

Scotland tries: Taylor (15), Russell (27), Watson (62)
Conversions: Russell (16,28,67)
Penalties: Tonks (3)
