Murray finds form to book semi-final slot
Murray bt Nishikori 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1
Andy Murray overcame a determined challenge from Kei Nishikori to power his way into the semi-finals at Roland Garros.
Trailing to a first set defeat, the world number one edged his way back into the match and took control in the third set after Nishikori capitulated in the tie-break.
Murray is now finally rediscovering his form from last year and will play Stan Wawrinka who beat Marin Cilic 6-3 6-3 6-1 for a place in the final.
Afterwards he said: “They are all playing extremely well… I came in playing garbage so I am the odd one out in the semis. Hopefully I can keep this up.”
In the biggest shock of the tournament Novak Djokovic lost in three sets to Austria’s Dominic Thiem who will play Raphael Nadal.
John McEnroe described the Serb’s final set capitulation as “inexplicable” and questioned the 12-time Grand Slam winner’s desire.
The defending champion lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-0. His final love set defeat was his first at a Slam since 2005.
He is now without a major title after holding all four 12 months ago.
