Derby shock

Wings in flying finish to win Classic

Wings of Eagles was a 40/1 shock winner of the Epsom Derby, beating two of the big fancied horses on the finishing line.

It was, however, a sixth victory in the race for trainer Aidan O’Brien who also saddled the second Cliffs of Moher (5/1). The 7/2 favourite Cracksman finished third.

Diore Lia, the controversial 1,000-1 outsider was earlier ruled out with an injury.

The filly’s participation in Britain’s biggest Flat race, to raise money for charity, has come in for criticism and she was withdrawn just before 11am on a self-certificate after pulling a muscle.

Owner-breeder Richard Aylward, said: “I’m distraught. She’s out and it’s devastating for me. She’s going to be okay, it’s just one of those things. She has a problem on one of her hind legs and is lame.”

The horse’s withdrawal followed the British Horse Racing Authority using a little known rule prevent the original jockey Gina Mangan from taking the ride because of her lack of experience.

Eighteen horses went to post.
