Bank of Scotland branches among latest closures
Lloyds Banking Group and Bank of Scotland are to close a further 100 branches and lose 325 jobs, as part of a cost-cutting strategy.
It said the branch cuts were part of 200 announced last July which will leave it with about 2,000 across the UK.
Trade union Unite condemned the closures, which will affect 54 Lloyds branches, 22 Halifax and 24 Bank of Scotland.
Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: “The continuous stream of branch closures announced by the UK’s retail bank branches appears to show no signs of ending.
“The industry must halt these endless branch closure programs and open their eyes to what these closures are doing to rural communities, their disabled customers and the small business customers who depend on access to a local branch.”
Earlier this week Lloyds said some of its branches would be operated by just two staff with tablet computers and that some counters would be boarded up.
Lloyds said the closures were caused by changing customer behaviour and the reduced number of transactions being made in branches.
