Probe into Murdoch bid

Watchdog Ofcom to investigate Sky takeover

Media regulator Ofcom is to investigate Rupert Murdoch’s proposed £11 billion takeover of satellite broadcaster Sky.

Culture secretary, Karen Bradley, has referred 21st Century Fox’s bid to buy the 61% of Sky it does not already own in order to examine potential public interest issues.

There are questions about whether Fox’s takeover will diminish media plurality in the UK.

Allowing the deal to proceed would give Mr Murdoch full control of Sky News, as well as the Times, Sunday Times and Sun newspapers and radio group TalkSport, through separate company News Corp.

A second issue is whether Fox is committed to maintaining editorial standards at Sky.

Fox News, which is also broadcast in the UK, has fallen foul of the regulator a number of times through editorial lapses, including its claim that Birmingham is a city “where non-muslims just simply don’t go”.
