World Cup qualifier
Martin strikes late to relieve Strachan
Scotland 1 Slovenia 0
Chris Martin gave Scotland manager Gordon Strachan the much-needed victory he was seeking in this World Cup qualifier.
Substitute Martin scored his third goal in 12 games for his country on 88 minutes to give Scotland a lifeline in their attempt to reach the 2018 finals in Russia.
It came after a frustrating first period when Leigh Griffiths hit the post and the bar as he continues his search for his first Scotland goal. In the second period there were further missed opportunities from Robert Snodgrass and Ikechi Anya who replaced him.
The result means Scotland move up a place to fourth in Group F, leapfrogging Lithuania and two points behind Slovakia in second place, with Slovenia dropping to third.
England remain well clear at the top of the group after a 2-0 victory over Lithuania at Wembley. Reccalled Jermain Defoe and Leicester striker Jame Vardy got the goals.
Sunderland strike Defoe last represented his country against Chile at Wembley in November 2013 and defied those who questioned manager Gareth Southgate’s decision to include him in the starting line up.
Scotland host England at Hampden Park on Saturday, 10 June.
