Trinity in talks with Express Newspapers

NewspapersTrinity Mirror, publisher of the Daily Record and the Daily Mirror, has confirmed it is in talks with Express owner Richard Desmond about buying some of his titles.

Northern & Shell Media Group owns four national newspapers – the Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday.

It is thought Trinity, which also owns a number of local papers and Scottish Business Insider,  is also interested in the group’s magazines such as OK.

In a statement this morning it said: “The Board of Trinity Mirror plc notes the recent media speculation and confirms that it is at an early stage of discussions towards taking a minority interest in a new company comprising certain of Northern & Shell’s assets.

“No offer has been made and there is no certainty that any agreement will be reached.

A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate.”

> Daily Business Comment: Speculation about a deal has rumbled on for some months and to some this tie-up would appear to be an “unholy trinity”, bringing together titles from opposing ends of the political spectrum.

However, this could also be the start of wider media consolidation against a backdrop of plummeting sales and circulations.
