Car firm in firing line

Ford in Mexico plant u-turn after Trump attack

Ford said it is scrapping plans to build a $1.6 billion assembly plant in Mexico just hours after president elect Donald Trump criticised General Motors over importing from the country.

Mr Trump said in a tweet that GM was sending some of its Chevrolet Cruze production from Mexico to US dealerships and paying no taxes on them.

Ford has now announced that it will build small cars in an existing Mexican factory, and invest $700 million in a Michigan facility, adding 700 workers making electric vehicles.

The company has also been a target for criticism from Mr Trump over its plan to build in Mexico.

He has used the car manufacturing sector as an example of why the North American Free Trade Agreement needs to be redrawn.
