Brits in form
Evans stuns Cilic; Ryder Cup; Hibs slip-up
Evans fought back from a first set defeat to topple the former US Open champion 3-6 7-5 6-3 6-3.
World Number One Andy Murray also progressed to the third round after overcoming an injury scare. He secured a 6-3 6-0 6-2 victory against 19-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev. He will play Sam Querry.
There were brief concerns for the Scot at 1-1 in the third set when he rolled his right ankle and cried out in pain as he fell to the floor. He later said it was “not too serious”.
But the day belonged to Evans, the 26-year-old British number three, who has beaten a player ranked in the world’s top 10 for the second time.
Evans will face Australian 27th seed Bernard Tomic or Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic.
Ryder Cup: Europe’s 2018 Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn will have one extra wildcard pick for his team, one of several changes the European Tour has made to its qualifying criteria for the event at Le Golf National in France.
Tournaments in the latter half of the season will carry weighted points, helping in-form players to qualify.
They will also only have to play four tournaments instead of five to retain their Tour membership.
Only European Tour members can be selected for the Ryder Cup.
The extra wildcard pick makes it less likely that a big name player misses out on the game’s top tournament.
Football – Scottish Cup: Hibernian football club has been forced into a red-faced apology to Bonnyrigg Rose supporters after a printing error on match tickets for this weekend’s cup tie.
The tickets provided to Hibernian wrongly state the date of the match as Sunday 22 January.
Supporters should be reassured that the match will take place on Saturday 21 January at 3pm.
