Ivy for Edinburgh? Other cities also on menu

Celebrity haunt The Ivy has dropped a strong hint that it could be heading for Scotland.

There has been much excitement that the top restaurant in London’s west end could be opening in Edinburgh, or maybe Glasgow, next year.

Adverts on Facebook and Twitter show a video of singer Kylie Minogue celebrating a party at the restaurant with guests including Kristin Scott Thomas and Allan Carr, and accompanied by the message “Merry Christmas Edinburgh! We look forward to seeing you in 2017!” It is signed #Ivy100″, noting its 100th anniversary.

However, similar adverts have appeared referencing other cities, including Cambridge, Manchester,  Harrogate and Birmingham.

It seems more likely that if it is planning to expand it will be through its Ivy Cafes and Brasseries, rather than the restaurant which may want to preserve its exclusivity. An Ivy brasserie has recently opened in Bristol.

However, a number of  restaurants have chosen Edinburgh for their first establishments outside London, including The Refinery which opened recently in St Andrew Square.

Six years ago The Ivy opened a pop-up during the Edinburgh Festival for one day only, while Des McDonald, a former head chef at The Ivy, now runs the kitchen at The Printing Press Bar, the former Tempus Bar in George Street.
