Car production heads for highest since 1999
Just over 1.61 million cars were made in the year to November, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said, putting the industry on course to make more vehicles than in any year since 1999.
Britain built 1.59 million vehicles last year and the LMC Automotive consultancy expect the total to reach 1.74 million this year.
The boom in output comes amid concerns that withdrawing from the EU will hit production.
However, Nissan received a “sweetener” from the UK government to ensure it continued to build cars, including the Qashqai, in the UK and more support is thought likely if other manufacturers begin to question their commitment to the UK.
