Spark unveils 69 new jobs as academy opens
The new recruits will take Spark’s total headcount to 417 – making it one of the biggest private sector employers in the Scottish Borders.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon officially opened The Spark Academy, located at the firm’s headquarters in the former Ettrick Riverside tweed mill.
Spark chief executive Chris Gauld said “Our investment in the Academy means that those joining the company, including the 69 jobs announced today, will receive their induction and training in a purpose-built facility that reflects our ambition, our culture, values and the professional standards we set.
“We’re committed to helping our team develop their careers, and many employees who started with us in front office or back office jobs have gone on to take on more specialist senior positions through our internal jobs market which is really rewarding.
“I’m excited to see us develop more and better ways to attract new talent to Spark through our school and college links as well as our growing apprentice programme. Recruiting, retaining and developing great people is a win-win for our business, our employees and ultimately our customers.”
Most of Spark’s staff live within 10 miles of Selkirk, making an invaluable contribution to the jobs market in a high unemployment area.
Two thirds of the new jobs will be in front and back office customer service teams with the rest recruited to specialist departments such as IT, finance, legal and compliance, HR and training.
Spark, which has received substantial backing from Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Investment Bank, has joined the board of the Borders Developing Young Workforce (DYW) initiative, a Scottish Government programme aimed at better preparing young people for the world of work.
Spark is also working with Tomorrow’s People, a charity in Galashiels, offering an employability course. Next week a group of people will join the Spark Academy to learn about the business, experience interview techniques and have a taster workshop on customer service skills.
