A party for customers, suppliers, neighbours, media folk and sundry others marked the official opening of Edinburgh’s latest style bar.

The Refinery occupies a unit in one of the biggest development projects undertaken in the city that has transformed the south side of St Andrew Square.

The bar is owned by Drake and Morgan, run by London-based Scot Gillian Maclean, which makes its first appearance in Scotland.

It prides itself on “creative cocktails” and seasonal British food. It has signed a 20 year lease on a 7,050 sq ft unit in the £75m development which will be home to other newcomers: STK Rebel, barbecue lobster shack Big Easy, Bombay style café Dishoom and Busaba Earthai.

The Refinery will be managed by former Montpeliers manager Sean Weeraratna who has worked in Edinburgh’s hospitality sector since he was 18.

Among those at the party were Eden Scott’s Guy Martin, Arbikie’s Iain Stirling and PR operator Judith O’Leary, together with her team.

TK Maxx, the fashion retailer, signed a lease on a 30,000 sq ft unit on South St David Street for its flagship Edinburgh store, while Standard Life Investments will  the 108,000 sq ft of offices.

Went the day after their opening event and was thoroughly disappointed. Terrible service and pretty average (bland) food. Shame as has the potential to be amazing but fails at the first hurdle.
