Messi magic ensures Celtic exit Europe
Celtic bowed to the almost inevitable last night after Lionel Messi’s two goals were enough to seal the Scottish Champions’ elimination from the top European club competition.
Victory for Barcelona meant the Spaniards secured top spot in Group C with Manchester City finishing second.
Celtic managed to avoid a repeat of the 7-0 mauling in the Bernabeu, and while Messi was again the main difference, Neymar proved a handful and Luis Suarez was denied a golden opportunity to add to the scoreline.
Neymar supplied the pass which gave Messi the opportunity to open the scoring for Barcelona and when Emilio Izaguirre pulled down Suarez early in the second half, Messi had no difficulty converting the penalty.
It was his fifth goal against Celtic in this season’s two Champions League matches between the teams and his 92nd in the competition overall.
The Scots could still equal Borussia Monchengladbach’s points tally, but the German side have the edge on goals scored between them and will qualify for the Europa League.
