Greig Laidlaw’s last-minute penalty gave Scotland victory and took them above their opponents into the top eight of world rugby.

Laidlaw and Nicolas Sanchez scored penalties in a scrappy first half. Matias Orlando and Sean Maitland converted tries in an improved second 40 minutes.

With a minute to play Scots fly-half Finn Russell saw his drop-goal charged down but the captain’s penalty snatched the win.

The World Cup draw takes place next May and top eight nations will comprise the highest seeding pots.

Line up:

Scotland: Hogg, Maitland, Jones, Dunbar, Seymour, Russell, Laidlaw (captain); Dell, Brown, Fagerson, Gilchrist, Gray, Bradbury, Watson, Barclay.

Replacements: Ford, Allan, Low, Swinson, Wilson, Price, Horne, Visser.
