Prime retail unit sold

Sports Direct deal leaves HMV’s future unclear

HMVHMV’s flagship store in Princes Street in Edinburgh has been sold to Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct.

It could not be confirmed whether HMV will continue to occupy the site, though it is expected to make way for the leisurewear retailer.

Nor could it be confirmed whether HMV would remain in the city centre. The store, facing the castle, was given a  stay of execution in 2013 when the chain fell into administration.

CBRE has sold the 20,500 sq ft unit over four floors on behalf of Lancashire County Pension Fund, c/o Knight Frank Investment Management.

Callum Mortimer, director in CBRE’s Retail team said: “Sports Direct is a very well-known and popular brand and assuming it decides to occupy the unit, it will be a welcome addition to the retail offering on Princes Street.”

Frank Montgomerie represented Sports Direct.
