Smith takes lead in creating tennis stars

Leon SmithTennis: Davis Cup-winning captain Leon Smith has been enlisted to help create more top players in Scotland.

Glasgow-born Smith, 40, worked with brothers Andy and Jamie Murray in their youth and coached Great Britain to its first Davis Cup victory since 1936.

He has been appointed performance director by Tennis Scotland and it is likely he will call on his proteges to help ensure their legacy lives on beyond their retirement.

Smith will lead the Davis Cup team over the next three years.

Football – Europa qualifiers: Hearts, 2-1 winners, and Aberdeen, who chalked up a 3-1 success, were made to battle as they kicked off their European campaigns in what will be a long season.

A penalty by Prince Buaben and a deflected Jamie Walker corner meant the Tynecastle side will take a narrow lead to Tallinn for the second leg of their Europa League first round qualifier after being a goal down to Infonet within the first 20 minutes.

This was a barely convincing performance to assure the 14,417 inside the ground that they will progress.

HEARTS: Hamilton, Rherras, Paterson, Souttar, Ozturk, Buaben (Kitchen 79), Nicholson, Djoum, Walker, Sammon, Delgado (King 65). Subs not used: Gallacher, Igor Rossi, Liam Smith, Todorov, Zanatta.

Derek McInnes was the most relieved observer at Pittodrie as Aberdeen scored twice in stoppage time to give the Dons a first-leg lead.

Just days after returning from Euro 2016 where he was part of Northern Ireland’s squad, Niall McGinn put the home side ahead against a determined CS Fola Esch.

The Luxembourg team were unhappy that the linesman flagged for offside before
changing his mind and their fury was complete when conceding a penalty seven minutes into added time.

Adam Rooney converted to give the home side a comfortable margin. Shay Logan scored to put Aberdeen ahead on 66 minutes.

ABERDEEN: Lewis, Logan, Taylor, Considine, Shinnie, Jack, Flood (Rooney 60), McGinn, McLean, Hayes, Stockley. Subs not used: Alexander, Reynolds, Smith, O’Connor, Pawlett, Wright.
