Capital clubs crash out of Europa League

Europa LeagueFootball – Europa League: It was a bad night for Edinburgh with both senior clubs crashing out of the competition at the second qualifying stage.

Hearts were beaten 2-1 at home to Birkirkara and went out on the same aggregate score, while Hibs lost 5-3 on penalties after beat Brondby 1-0 in Copenhagen to square the tie.

Aberdeen secured a 1-0 success over Ventspils to go through to the next round 4-0 on aggregate.

David Gray levelled the tie for the Easter Roa club after 62 minutes but John McGinn missed the first of Hibs’ penalties while Brondby managed to score all theirs.

After leaving Malta last week with a goalless draw, Hearts seemed to have the perfect opportunity to progress.

But two second half goals from the visitors put them in command before Conor Sammon grabbed a late consolation.

Adam Rooney hit a 79th minute winner in Latvia to put Aberdeen into the third qualifying round.

Joe Lewis saved a first-half penalty for the Dons.
