Euro 2016: Hosts into last eight
Hazard masterclass puts Belgium in QFs
Pre-tournament favourites march on
Football: Belgium’s Eden Hazard found his best form to help destroy Hungary and confirm his team’s pre-tournament credentials at Euro 2016.
Hazard, who had a poor season for Chelsea, delivered a masterclass, capped with the third of Belgium’s goals, although their opponents were better value than the score suggested.
It was the biggest margin victory of the competition and Belgium will be a tough test for Wales who they now meet in the quarter-final.
Hosts France had to overcome an early setback to beat the Republic of Ireland to book their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.
The Republic were ahead in the second minute as Robbie Brady, hero of the victory over Italy, converted a penalty following a foul on Shane Long.
A quick double early in the second half from Antoine Griezmann (pictured) preceded the Shane Duffy being sent off for a foul on the scorer.
Didier Deschamps’s team will now face England or Iceland in the next round at Stade de France next Sunday.
Germany found their goal-scoring boots to coast to a 3-0 victory against Slovakia. It was the joint highest winning margin at the tournament.
Boateng, Gomez and Draxler were the scorers as the winners also managed the rare German feat of missing a penalty when Osil’s spot kick was saved.
